Expert Rating :
6.5/10

Avast VPN streams Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and German Netflix, but not much else.

Avast VPN may be able to stream certain popular services like Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and German Netflix, but its ability to stream other services may be limited. Users who require a VPN that can reliably stream a wider variety of services may need to look elsewhere for a more comprehensive solution.

It’s important to note that streaming services are constantly updating their security measures, and VPN services may not always be able to bypass these measures to provide access. Additionally, VPNs can sometimes impact streaming quality and speed, so users who prioritize a smooth streaming experience should carefully evaluate whether Avast VPN or any other VPN service can meet their needs.

Avast VPN doesn’t unblock US Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max

While Avast VPN is capable of unblocking some streaming services such as Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and German Netflix, it may not be able to unblock other services like US Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max. These services are known to be particularly aggressive in their efforts to block VPN traffic, and even the most advanced VPN services may struggle to bypass their security measures.

Users who require access to these services may need to consider alternative VPN solutions or other methods for accessing the content they desire. As with any VPN service, users should always conduct their own research and testing to determine if Avast VPN or any other service meets their specific needs.

Privacy & Logging Policy

Avast VPN logs too much data

Ranked #17 out of 35 VPNs
Expert Rating :
6.8/10

Avast VPN has a strict no-logging policy, meaning that it does not collect or store any user activity logs, including browsing history, connection logs, or any other data that could be used to identify users.

However, it’s important to note that Avast VPN does collect some minimal data to help improve the service, such as the user’s email address, payment information, and information about the devices and platforms being used to access the service. This data is used for account management purposes and to troubleshoot technical issues with the service.

Some jurisdictions may have laws that require VPN services to collect user data or provide access to user data upon request by authorities, which can compromise users’ online privacy and security.

Security & Technical Features

Avast VPN is sufficiently secure but rather basic.

Ranked #17 out of 35 VPNs
Expert Rating :
6.5/10

Avast VPN is designed to provide users with a secure and reliable VPN service that helps protect their online privacy and security. The service uses strong encryption protocols to secure users’ internet traffic, and its strict no-logging policy ensures that user activity remains private and anonymous.

However, compared to some other VPN services, Avast VPN may be considered rather basic in terms of its features and capabilities. That being said, Avast VPN is still a viable option for users who are looking for a simple and effective VPN service. Its user-friendly interface and fast connection speeds make it easy for users to connect to servers and browse the internet securely. Users who require more advanced features or a wider range of server options may need to consider alternative VPN solutions.

Avast uses an experimental protocol

Avast has developed its own protocol called Avast Mimic, which is proprietary and described as “experimental.” However, the term “experimental” may suggest that it has not undergone the same level of rigorous testing and security checks as Avast’s other established products.

This could raise concerns about the reliability and security of the protocol, especially when it comes to VPNs, where users rely on data protection. In short, the use of an experimental protocol may not inspire confidence in users who expect reliable and secure data protection.

Torrenting

Fast torrent speeds, but Avast's logging policy is a concern

Ranked #17 out of 35 VPNs
Expert Rating :
6.5/10

Avast VPN allows torrenting on its network. However, users should keep in mind that not all servers may be optimized for torrenting, and some may restrict P2P traffic. It’s essential to choose a server location that explicitly allows P2P traffic and to ensure that any downloaded files do not violate copyright laws or other legal regulations.

Torrent Attribute Results
Average Download Bitrate 9.3 MiB/s
No. of P2P Servers 700
Logging Policy No logs
Kill Switch Yes
Port Forwarding No

Avast VPN’s use of AES-256 encryption and other security features can help protect user privacy and security while torrenting. However, it’s important to note that using a VPN does not guarantee complete anonymity, and users should still take precautions to protect their online identity and avoid engaging in any illegal activities.

It’s also worth noting that some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) may restrict or block P2P traffic, so it’s essential to check your ISP’s policies and terms of service to avoid any potential issues.

No Port Forwarding Available

Avast VPN does not offer port forwarding as a feature. Port forwarding can be useful for users who need to access specific ports for applications or services running on their devices. However, some VPN services, including Avast VPN, do not offer this feature.

Bypassing Web Censorship

Avast SecureLine works in China

Ranked #17 out of 35 VPNs
Expert Rating :
8.9/10

Some users successfully use Avast SecureLine VPN to bypass the Great Firewall of China. Still, it’s important to note that VPN services can be blocked or restricted in China at any time, and there’s no guarantee of how long such success will last. Despite this uncertainty, Avast SecureLine is considered a good option for anti-censorship VPN use.

Avast SecureLine VPN is confirmed to work in China despite the absence of any anti-censorship features. Our test from a server in Shanghai successfully bypassed the Great Firewall by connecting securely to South Korea using Avast’s auto-connect function.

However, it’s uncertain how long this success will last without obfuscation, and if Avast gains recognition as an anti-censorship VPN, it may lead to increased crackdowns by Chinese authorities. Avast’s website and products are blocked in China, so downloading the VPN beforehand or using another VPN that works in the country is necessary.

Avast can also combat censorship in less restrictive countries like Russia and Turkey. While we don’t recommend Avast over a dedicated anti-censorship VPN like Astrill for use in China, it’s good to know that Avast works there if you’re already an Avast user.
